Most universities need proof of English. The three most common tests are IELTS, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT.
IELTS Academic
Widely accepted everywhere. The speaking test is face-to-face with an examiner. A UKVI version is needed for some UK visas below degree level.
PTE Academic
Fully computer-based with fast results (often within 48 hours). Accepted by UK, Australian and many Canadian institutions.
TOEFL iBT
Popular for North America; accepted by many UK and Australian universities too.
