Canada remains a top choice for students who want quality education with strong work opportunities. Since 2024 the rules have tightened, so a well-prepared file matters more than ever.
1. Get a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
Only Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) can accept international students. Choose the program carefully: your field of study can affect post-graduation work permit eligibility.
2. Provincial / Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)
Most new study permit applicants now need an attestation letter from the province, issued through the college or university. Without it the application is not accepted.
3. Show your funds
You must prove you can pay tuition and living costs. Many students use a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) plus paid first-year tuition and bank or education-loan documents.
4. Medical, biometrics and application
Complete your upfront medical exam with a panel physician, apply online and give biometrics. The former Student Direct Stream (SDS) has ended, so all students now apply through the regular process — clean, complete documents make the difference.
